Pinwheeling Stars...

...pegged to an apple tree...
...as you do...in the Saga of the Purple Disappearing Pinwheels...

This was a whole lot of fun to make...go here to see the Missouri Star Quilt Company video...while the tutorial uses a layer cake I, of course, ignored that bit and cut my own 10" squares from my chosen three main and one background fabrics. I only used 10" as that was the layer cake size and for the first turn that was close to following the instructions for me.

I'm thinking the fabric I have left will make up a nice scrappy binding. The backing is just plain purple homespun, nothing exciting there, and if there isn't enough of the top fabrics left to make the required length of binding I can put some of that in to stretch it out.  There won't be any bordering going on - not enough fabric left to make it 5 x 5 instead of 4 x 5 let alone for borders and, although I only bought the fabric less than a month ago, the shop is 2kms from a work site that I no longer work at and it is 120kms up the highway one way so no, I'm not going for a quick shop - I'm just living with going with what I have and be done with it.

Now to set up the "big" machine on the kitchen table (the machine is too heavy for the sewing table), suck it up and get it quilted...oh the horror!!!

See you on the other side of what will no doubt be some kind of grand quilting fiasco!

Pinwheels and hexagons...playing with more hexie shapes for a small giftee...a needle keep based on a Busyfingers pattern I've made before...it is actually three quilt as you go hexies and a pocket is formed from the back cover and centre hexie...left out a couple of the design elements to suit my purpose this time...
And I realised I haven't shown something I finished a few weeks ago...the pinwheel table runner...done and dusted and ready for running over the sideboard...being modelled by the couch :)...

A Quick Project....

While giving the cutting table a bit of a tidy this morning I came across the left over block from the pinwheel runner...so, in the spirit of don't file it use it...with some offcuts of Whimsey and a scrap of cotton batting...I filled in the hour before leaving for work this afternoon...

Pinwheel mug rug (big coaster)...another OPAM for July and a block that escaped the block orphanage...

Pinwheel Progress...

The pinwheel runner has progressed to a finished top...

It actually reached this state a week ago but I kept forgetting to take the photo to finish the post...

June Friday Night Sew-In...

Last night was Friday Night Sew-In and for the first time in months I was all systems go with no calendar clashes or last minute interruptions. Preparations were undertaken...

* sewing room tidied, dusted & vacuumed ready for action - check!
* fabric washed and ready for the pinwheel project - check!
* essential nutrients at the ready (bowl of lollies) - check!
* projects lined up - check!
* Mac on hand for checking of blogs and general distraction inspiration - check!

All good.

A couple of warm up exercises...joining seam for a table runner backing...and sewing in of thread ends on this Christmas wallhanging (now ready for binding if I ever made a decision on what that is going to be!)...

Then I finished cutting out these shapes to get that box of fabric off the cutting table...mmmm, what could they be for?...

Sewing muscles duly warmed up it was time to move on to the Main Event for the evening...the pinwheel project...
Block trimming to 5 1/2” (they were a bit shy of 6" and I probably should have trimmed to 5 3/4" but I was reading the ruler at 5 3/4" when I started off (ejit that I am!)...and once cut can't be glued back on so 5 1/2" they are...

Then a decision on which of the three fabrics on hand to use as the alternate blocks...

Pinned up on wall...mmmm, which to use as the setting triangles?  The same as the alternate blocks or...yep, the blue one...

This is as far as I made it...

...excuse Bumbl'e Bee underneath, it really isn't unpinnable yet without destruction...no actual sewing on this one but almost ready for P-faff to swing into action...

Hope your FNSI was productive...

Long Weekend Wheeling...

It was the Queen's Birthday long weekend this week...and after all, I've only got a zillion UFO's to choose from, so what did I do...start something new of course!...

Take a charm pack which has been sitting on the shelf waiting patiently for ages...(edited to a slideshow)...

Fun and easy...I used the method for making quarter square triangles that Tonya posted...works a treat...a plan evolved as I was making the pinwheels...what? I didn't have a plan to start with, how surprising! Not!!..maybe the project to work on if I sign up for Friday Night Sew-In which is this week...

And so what is on the wall this week...

The pinwheels...Bumb'le Bee which currently has an "issue" requiring reverse sewing - grrrr I obviously wasn't concentrating properly...and another find from the quilt top cupboard - 30's repros scotty dogs...

But for now, it's back to work...drat...
