FNSI Gardening..

As Friday night isn't happening anywhere in the world I have to accept my It'sstillFridaysomewhereFridayNightSewIn has to come to a close.

Friday Night Aussie Time I wimped out early, like 9:30 (21:30), being soooo tired and with the attention span of a goldfish with dementia, the result of a day with way too many elements that went way too long without stopping.  My Friday Night Aussie Time consisted of  an entire 100gram block of chocolate and stitching triangles and diamonds around maybe 1/4 of the perimeter of the  hexies...not much to show for that gardening session.  So, after a short nap of 8-9 hours, gardening continued in Friday Night Over There Time...and I really did sew along in USA time watching Bonnie on Quiltcam as she sewed before going to bed Friday night her time...fun!...

When I went to bed last night the garden had grown to...

I've a bit of time this morning before going to the fire station for our AGM and on to work for the afternoon so I'm out of here to stitch on a few more flowers before I have to leave.

A Little Pouch...

A couple of Sundays ago I ventured down to Melbourne and met Rosie & Judy at Jeff's Shed at the Craft & Quilt Show....yes I know, it was over a week ago but what can I say, lazy...local quilt group bought group tickets for all members so my ticket was "free" (only reason I went really)...knowing where unrestricted parking is on a Sunday from my days of working at Etihad Stadium I walked the 10 minutes down and across the river...it's always dodgy when I cross the river, my radar goes all out of whack on the wrong side...when I worked in an office situated in the World Trade Centre, back when dinosaurs walked the earth, I once asked my boss where Clarendon Street was...he pointed out the window and pretty much straight down...yep I had no idea that Spencer Street became Clarendon Street when the river was crossed!!!...Melbournites are now requested to kindly stop laughing!...anyway, the point is, it's way safer for me to park on the right side of the river and walk, I have much less chance of driving around in circles or ending up lost in the wilds of the south east somewhere with no idea how I got there!

So, anyway, free ticket, free parking...liking the cost structure so far! I arrive and find Rosie & Judy who tell me they've booked into a class at the Brother stand...a quick trip to the stand and I snaffle the last spot in the class...yay!...and again, free!!!...no idea what the class is mind you, I'm being a total follower this day and just happy to tag along and I'm not adverse to playing with a new machine...

At the "classroom" area of the stand the tutor gave everyone a project pack and we got to play with a nifty little machine...we started by stitching rows of pretty embroidery stitches...

Such pretty stitches...1 1/2 hours later and cream homespun was transformed into a cute little button closure pouch (pattern by Brother - Take-Anywhere Purse)...

Decorated with embroidery stitching and an appliqued heart the pouch finishes at about 7" x 4 1/4", a useful size for toting about a little stitchery or some hexies/paper piecing shapes in the handbag...and did I mention...free!!!

This is the whizzy little machine we got to play with...very nice...and user friendly too...

Probably a good thing there isn't any spare in the bank account or I'd have been very tempted as they were not at all expensive and sewed nicely.

After lunch Judy went off to do her own thing for a while and Rosie & I sat in on a no-cost talk by the lovely Monica Poole who shared the basics of her quilt-as-you-go techniques, which was interesting.  I was sitting right in front of one of her applique quilts (a BOM with a peacock in the centre) and it was just gorgeous.

The Victorian Quilters Showcase is part of this show and there were lots of lovely quilts but as signage at the entrance requested no photos you'll just have to believe me.

There has been precious little else to share going on...although I have revisited the Quilt Whose Name I Can't Remember, all the diamond paper shapes are covered, the triangles are started and I've joined the first round of hexie flowers (took a little detour from covering papers)...if I can keep up any sort of momentum there may be something to show with that soon(ish).

Sparrows Nest...

The Sparrows Nest block started in Susan Smith's class at Summer School back in January is an orphan block on longer...it was finished last night but it needed a bath before going out in public.  I always had it in mind to hand quilt the block with orange perle thread which I had yet to find in my travels, so coming across the spool of orange hand quilting thread at the charity quilt-in day a couple of weeks ago was close enough...

I used three different quilting stencils...starting with a circular petals design in the centre and dragonflies on each corner then decided it also needed something the sides and added a round petal flower...a bit of fun playing with different designs. Self-bound with the backing fabric instead of a separate binding, a thin poly batting and finishing at 13" square(ish) (it's a little bit not quite square).

A finish for OPAM for July...yay!...

A Mocking Project...

On top of the project boxes was a screwed up pile of almost finished that has been mocking, taunting and generally poking its tongue out at me and calling me a slacker...and it was right...an hour, that's all it took to turn that screwed up pile of started ages ago into...

Ironing not included...

...a finished Sherbet Pips quilt top.  It only needed two borders sewn on (one of which was three-quartered pinned on already) and the corner squares cut and sewn in...and yes it needs a darn good ironing but I got excited and had to take a pic while it was spread out on the loungeroom floor...

FNSI...There was a Finish...

Friday Night Sew-In last night and I started out by sandwiching and pinning this top which has been waiting patiently for a few years...

now ready for hand quilting with quilting thread I bought last Sunday at a charity quilt-in in the local hall...

pretty huh!...as you can see from the difference in colour in the orange one, which I've been using during the week, the reels have probably been "on the shelf" for yonks but as they were only $4.50 each and the perfect colours for a couple of small tops that have been hanging about for ages I figured they'd be fine and I love the wooden spools so they are decorative too...

Moving that top off the tapestry stand where it had been residing revealed a small applique/stitchery hiding underneath...this was gifted to me as part of a swap a few years ago organised by Karen of Mrs Martin's Quilt Shop...so I decided to sandwich that one as well ...

A finish...not sure yet whether it will be a wallhanging, a little table decoration or even a Christmas mug rug...I'll worry about that in December, right now it's a finish on the board...wahoo!

Rosie visited yesterday afternoon and bought me a present from her recent trip to the NSW North Coast...

gorgeous fabric...I love it!!...thank you Rosie...we didn't end up stitching but instead went for a trip down the street to the local habby so Rosie could look for wool (she is getting a grandbubby, so exciting), 4ply in "non-baby" colours, five balls, was the goal...we found a lovely one and Rosie liked three of the non-traditional colours...one they had enough of, one only had two balls left and was discontinued and the last they were out of stock...so we took a drive up the highway to another habby about 1/2 hour away to check out their wool...yay! the out-of-stock colour was found...but only three balls of the discontinued one...so a phone call was made to my local shop and guess what?...both shops had the same dye lot...how lucky was that...the local shop put the two balls under the counter and we picked them up on the way back home for a cuppa...a very successful shopping trip...there was a gorgeous Mohair in variegated colours that I would have loved but maybe I should finish the sock before I go off on a knitting or crocheting tangent...goodness knows I've got enough stitchy UFO's I certainly don't need any more yarn based ones!!!  And speaking of the sock, yes there has been progress...

The orange quilting thread has been stitching all week on a little something that may even get finished by the end of the weekend...this may be too much like progress, I might need a lie down!

A New Bag for A New Project...

For a while now I've wanted to make the sewing bag in Anni Downs' Some Kind of Wonderful book but using whole fabric pieces for the front and back in place of the small squares and stitcheries that Anni created...not because I don't like Anni's design but I just had a different picture in my head for that bag shape.  Last Saturday was the day...it was horrible weather but just right for a sewing room adventure...a rummage in the curtaining fabric tub produced two pieces of sample book fabrics that went together nicely with complimentary contrasting textures and colours...this morning I put in a couple of hand stitches that I missed and popped in my started this week knitting project...perfect size!...

...and the knitting project?...while looking for something else I dived into the yarn drawer and this ball of sock wool just yelled at me...you've had me for about 6 years knit me up already!!!!...of course I didn't have the right size set of needles (what is it with having every other size but the one I want!!!)...but the local habby came good and so...

...growing very very slowly...a sock!...by next winter it may have a twin and I may have warm tootsies...
